Born in Amiens in 1992, Bastien Marienne began his studies in medicine and physiotherapy before fully turning to art — and more specifically to painting. After working in the clinical field and private practice, he devoted his free time to nurturing his passion for art. It was after three years in Paris that he made the decision to leave everything behind for Marseille, where he set up a studio entirely dedicated to his artistic practice. There, he immersed himself in a daily creative process, producing his first canvases, many of which were portraits.
Bastien’s dual background — both scientific and artistic — naturally led him to explore the representation of the human body. His mastery of anatomical drawings and schematics, acquired during his medical studies, gives him a deep understanding of human proportions and structure. This expertise is reflected in his works, where the human figure, sometimes subtly hidden, plays a central role.
His creations invite the viewer to explore visual scenes of life, landscapes, and interiors, where characters and objects often remain concealed, revealing themselves only to those who know how to look. While he seeks to immerse the observer in worlds that are sometimes utopian or idealistic, his paintings always contain symbols and reflections on the human condition and the passing of time. Through his works, Bastien questions our very existence, confronting us with realities that are often invisible yet always present.
In his work, the influences of David Hockney and Edward Hopper are evident in his compositions, his use of space, and his approach to color. However, he also draws deeply from Impressionism and the great masters such as Gauguin, Cézanne, and Monet. This influence emerges in his figurative and expressive style, where colors and forms blend to create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and universal.
The recurring themes in Bastien’s work are numerous: the passage of time, relationships, solitude, work, love, difference, and self-irony. Each painting serves as an invitation to reflection, analysis, and contemplation. Bastien offers his audience a world of light and shadow — a personal quest where each viewer can find themselves within the meanderings of their own thoughts.
Rather than repeating a series, Bastien chooses to let himself be guided by the present moment, his true creative driver. “A meeting can inspire a portrait, just as a journey can inspire a landscape.” This approach, fueled by the fleeting nature of time, is essential to his process: it allows him to maintain the freshness and energy of each creation while capturing the essence of what surrounds him.
Through his paintings, Bastien captures attention with his vibrant colors, striking contrasts, and meticulous compositions. His work, often engaged and sometimes critical of society, seeks above all to touch the viewer’s soul — inviting introspection about the world around us while leaving room for free interpretation.
In November 2025, Bastien Marienne joined Galerie Outsiders in Rouen, marking a new chapter in his artistic journey. This collaboration reflects the very essence of his practice: a dialogue between technical mastery, emotional depth, and a contemporary vision of humanity.
