Sara Benninga is a contemporary artist based in Jerusalem. Her work explores the complex relationship between figure and background, shaped by ideas of fragmentation, the uncanny, and social interaction. Through layered and dynamic compositions, she questions how bodies coexist, relate, or merely appear side by side.

Working with a range of materials — charcoal, dry pastel, acrylic, and oil — Benninga deconstructs traditional narratives of representation and critically engages with art history, particularly in relation to gender and human relationships. Her figures, often inspired by people from her immediate environment, inhabit spaces of ambiguity that invite multiple interpretations.

Balancing tension and connection, Benninga’s painting offers a deeply personal yet universal exploration of how meaning, intimacy, and difference emerge within fragmented realities.
